Did you know people with disabilities are twice as likely to experience violence, compared to people without disabilities? Therefore, it is important to spread awareness to reduce domestic violence against people with disabilities. This blog addresses why people with disabilities are at a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence and how to seek help if you are a victim of domestic violence.
There are a few reasons on why people with disabilities experience violence. One of these reasons is they may be reliant on their abuser for care, as their abuser may be their caregiver, support worker or family member. This can be
hard for the person to leave the relationship as their abuser may be providing them with personal care and financial security. Abusers are also skilled in manipulation and control tactics; therefore, the abuser may tell their victim they are the only ones who will accept them and can help them.
The person may also not be aware of the abuse they are experiencing is wrong. For example, the person could be forced medication, inappropriately touched while they are being assisted with getting dressed or getting locked in their room. They also may have trouble communicating with others, making it difficult for them to seek help.
